JUNIOR GOLF

Die Boland U19 span is tans besig met hul voorbereiding om aan die jaarlikse Inter Provinsiale toernooi deel te neem. Boland is die trotse gashere vir hierdie toernooi wat plaasvind vanaf 13 – 18 Desember 2015 by die Worcester Gholf Klub.

Ons spog met ‘n talentvolle jong span wat verseker die talent en vermoë het om hierdie jaar die B Afdeling te kan wen.

Die span word aangevoer deur Charl de Villiers van Stellenbosch.

Ons doen ‘n beroep op die Bolanders om hierdie span te kom ondersteun!

ADVIES VAN ONS PROS

Lifting, Dropping & Placing the Ball (Rule 20)

 

Prior to lifting a ball that has to be replaced (e.g. when you lift a ball on the putting green to clean it), the position of the ball must be marked (Rule 20-1).

When the ball is being lifted in order to drop or place it in another position (e.g. dropping within two club-lengths under the unplayable ball Rule), it is not mandatory to mark its position although it is recommended that you do so.

When dropping, stand erect, hold the ball at shoulder height and arm’s length and drop it.

The most common situations where a dropped ball must be re-dropped are when the ball:
-rolls to a position where there is interference from the condition from which free relief is being taken (e.g. an immovable obstruction)
-comes to rest more than two club-lengths from where it was dropped, or
-comes to rest nearer the hole than its original position, the nearest point of relief or where the ball has last crossed the margin of a water hazard.

There are nine situations in total when a dropped ball must be re-dropped and they are covered in Rule 20-2c. If a ball dropped for a second time rolls into any of these positions, you place it where it first struck the course when re-dropped.

Servaas de Kock vereer met Ere Lidmaatskap

The Boland Gholf Unie was tydens die afgelope Algemene Jaarvergadering bevoorreg om een van die groot staatmakers te vereer met Ere lidmaatskap. Servaas de Kock dien reeds die afgelope 17 jaar op die bestuur van die Unie. Met sy entoesiasme, lojaliteit, passie en verhoudings met klubs en spelers het Servaas deur die jare diep spore getrap.

Namens die Boland Gholf Unie wil ons vir Servaas bedank vir ‘n ongelooflike bydrae in die vooruitgang van die Unie. Mag jy nog jare saam met ons die pad stap.

CASTLE LITE FINAAL
Al die deelnemers aan die finaal van die Castle Lite-kompetisie het dit baie geniet. Die toernooi is op die Stellenbosch-baan gespeel. Die wenners van die dag, Peter Willemse en Eben Lingeveldt van Malmesbury was die algehele wenners.

Hul wentelling was 45 stableford-punte. George Marais en Kobus Visser was die naaswenners en H. Basson en H. Wibooi was in die derde plek. Well done aan almal!

HEXVALLEI OPE
Cedric Rooi se vorm bly vuurwarm en hy was die oortuigende wenner van die Hexvallei Ope na rondes van 69 en 65.

Die Uitvoerende Komitee het George Bezuidenhoutversoek om klubs en spelers in die Boland te kontak en met ‘n voorstel na die komitee terug te kom hoe ons senior gholf gedurende 2016 kan verbeter. Ons versoek spelers en klubs om George behulpsaam te wees met hierdie ondersoek.

ANCHORED PUTTING STROKE

Attention to anyone using an anchored putting stroke: Your time is almost up. When golf's governing bodies—the USGA and R&A—jointly announced the ban on anchored strokes May 21, 2013 (all anchored strokes, not just putting), the implementation date of Jan. 1, 2016 seemed far away. Now it's almost here. That means golfers who have gotten used to sticking a club against their chest, gut, chin, ear or any other body part to prevent the club from swinging unhindered are on the clock to find an alternative. This includes 2013 Masters Champion Adam Scott, who was still anchoring his putter late in the 2015 season. Forget whether you agree with Rule 14-1b. You're going to have to live with it. Because if you anchor, someone in your foursome is likely to say: "Get that stuff outta here!" Not to mention you'll incur a two-shot penalty in stroke play or loss of hole in match play.






Why did the USGA and R&A ban anchoring? They believed it ran counter to the spirit of what a stroke is: The club should swing freely. They also wanted to eliminate the perception that anchoring gave golfers an unfair advantage.

If you want to continue to use a longer putter, that's OK. But here are some things you need to know. If you accidentally brush the grip against a loose shirt, you're fine. You're penalized only if you intended to anchor the club. Going sidesaddle is also permissible. So is putting like Matt Kuchar, who braces the club against a forearm. You can do this because the club still swings without interference. Just keep in mind that if you brace your forearm against your body while putting sidesaddle or Kooch style, it's a penalty. Still confused? Check out these examples of what you can and can't do under the new rule.

Graag verwelkom ons vir Jaco Theron wat op 16 November 2015 by die Boland kantore begin werk het as Junior Ontwikkelings Beampte.

Jaco het hierdie jaar sy 3 Jaar PGA kurses by Swingfit Performance Academy in die hart van die Boland op Stellenbosch voltooi.
“Ek het ook ‘n groot liefde vir junior gholf. Ek voorsien dat gholf in die Boland op alle vlakke gaan presteer oor volgende paar jaar en sal graag ‘n bydrae daartoe wil lewer.

Boland gholf Unie is my tuiste vir die laaste 3 jaar. Ek het baie respek vir dit wat die Unie vermag het en waardeer die gasvryheid van al die klubs met wie ek tot nou toe te doen gekry het.
Ek sien geweldig uit na die uitdagings wat voorlê.” 

JUNIOR GOLF




SA Golf Development
Ons doel by die South African Golf Development Board(SAGDB) is om gholf te ontwikkel in agter geblewe gemeenskappe en om minder bevooregte kinders die geleentheid te gee om die spel gholf te leer ken en te geniet en sodoende ook selfstandige Suid-Afrikaanse Burgers te help vorm.

Ons program is besig in 4 areas in die Boland, Stellenbosch/Devonvale area waar kinders afrigting kry op Devonvale gholfbaan, Riverside area waar kinders afrigting kry op Riverside gholfbaan en Piketberg/De Hoek area waar afrigting plaasvind op Piketberg en De Hoek gholfbaan. Daar is ook tans afrigting wat plaasvind vir kinders in die Paarl/Wellington area by Mayerskraal Driving range. Afrigting van alle kinders vind plaas een keer per week, met ons beter spelers wat 2 keer per week afgerig word. Die beste spelers van die areas word dan deur ons hoof afrigter afgerig. Ons streeks toernooie is baie belangrik en dis waar jonger spelers die geleentheid kry om ander bane te speel en te kompeteer teen mekaar om sodoende te kyk wie reg is om in die junior toernooie deel te neem.



Huidiglik is daar 281 kinders in ons program. Daar is ook SAGDB skole liga wedstryde wat plaasvind deur die jaar tussen skole van Riverside/Worcester en Swellendam. Hierdie wedstryde word gespeel op Swellendam, Robertson, Montagu en Riverside gholfbane.

Daar is tans spelers van reg oor die hele Boland wat in ons SAGDB premier groep is. Hierdie spelers is geidentifiseer as ons beste spelers en speel in junior en klub opes in die Boland. Hierdie jaar was 9 spelers van ons top groep op geneem in Boland spanne.

Ook n groot dankie aan al die gholfbane wat hul fasiliteite beskikbaar stel sodat ons gholf verder kan ontwikkel. Sonder u hulp is daar geen ontwikkeling.

SPIRIT OF THE GAME

Honesty, integrity, courtesy
Three words that have come to represent the spirit in which the game of golf is played.
Part of that spirit sits beneath the term, ‘etiquette’ and part of it relates to the Rules of Golf. But the Spirit of the Game goes much deeper than just those two tangible terms.
It is something that every golfer should develop an innate sense of, something that is born of golf’s unparalleled history, and something which lifts golf, one could argue, above other sports.

Fair is Square
Whether it’s through divot and pitch-mark repair, or simply through silence on the tee, the spirit of the game dictates that players make sure they give others on the course, often opponents, a fair chance to play the best shot they can.
For most of us, the game of golf is self-regulating. There is seldom a referee present so we are reliant upon our own honest adherence to the Rules in order to enjoy the game. As a result we are all occasionally forced to call a penalty on ourselves for infringements which, often, will go unnoticed by everyone else.

It is this dependency upon honesty and courtesy that has elevated ‘integrity’ to sacrosanct status. Without them, we may as well hang up our clubs.

CLUB NEWS

TheeWaterskloof Golf Club
The nine hole golf course is situated within a private, secure housing estate called the Theewaterskloof Country Estate 8 kilometres from Villiersdorp on the R43 to Hermanus.

Due to its unique setting, relatively high in the mountains and on the eastern shores of the Theewaterskloof Dam, it has become one of the sought-after areas in the Overberg. The golf course is attractive and testing and the lakeside setting, fynbos, mountains, orchards and vineyards all give it a lovely rural setting. Spectacular views across the dam and the Franschhoek Mountains provide the perfect backdrop for enjoying a round of golf.

The golf course is rated in the top nine hole courses in South Africa by the Golf Digest. It is common knowledge with local golfers that the greens are amongst the best in the Western Cape. Although there are only nine greens, the course play like 18 holes, as there are different tee boxes on all holes varying the distances and angles to the fairways and greens.

Visitors are always welcome and tourists should take the opportunity to play a round at this club. The green fees are very reasonable.

The course is within an hour’s drive from Hermanus, Kleinmond, Franschhoek, Paarl, Worcester, Caledon and the northern suburbs of Cape Town.

The Boland Golf Union is currently busy assisting SAGA with the planning of the 2015 U19 Inter Provincial Tournament that will take place at the Worcester Golf Club over the period 13-18 December 2015. All Bolanders in the vicinity of Worcester are urged to go and support our junior team during this week which offers to be a great golfing week.

SA Kids Golf
SA Kids Golf is a Non Profit National Organization operating since 2005 and we are supported by the SA Golf Association (SAGA) and the PGA of South Africa. We offer professional golf by means of competitive bi-monthly tournaments to children between the ages of 5 and 14 years across South Africa. We start our junior golfers off forward tees in accordance with their age and gender with a parental caddy system in order to teach the kids the etiquette and rule of the Game of Golf with fantastic exposure and achievements internationally. 

SA Kids Golf sanctioned the hosting of thirty two golf tournaments throughout South Africa for 2014 and extended these into 2015. Our bi-monthly tournaments typically have between 60 and 80 children competing per tournament in Gauteng and we have subsequently opened up in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga where over 300 children compete in any month in multiple Provinces.

SAKG - Western Cape
The first tournament held in the Western Cape was at Mowbray Golf Club in 2014, we have since, held monthly events all over the Southern suburbs and Northern suburbs with great success and loads of enthusiasm from both parents and children. We currently have between 30 to 50 children in the various age categories that participates regularly. One of the characteristic features of the game of golf is the handicapping system. A handicap allows players of all levels of golfing ability to compete against each other equally and, consequently, is essential to the popularity and prosperity of the game.

In amateur golf, the majority of competitions cater for players who have a wide range of golfing ability. If no allowance was made for this variation then the relatively small number of high-ability players would be successful in all competitions.

Throughout the world, a golf handicap is recognised as representing the number of strokes that need to be deducted from the player’s actual (gross) score so that, when he plays to his average ability, his nett score equals a "Standard Score". The amount deducted (i.e. the player’s "handicap") is calculated so as to be representative of the player's current ability and potential at the point in time that they play in a competition.

Generally, amateur golfers have handicaps and, the better the player, the lower the handicap. Professionals tend not to have handicaps as they play in competitions without handicaps.

As a player improves, his handicap will reduce. Some highly-skilled players reach the stage where their handicaps are zero, better known as "scratch". A select few may even become so good that their handicap enters positive figures (e.g. +1, +2), which means they have to add strokes to their total for the round.

Stroke play
In stroke play, a handicap is a certain number of strokes that a player is allowed to remove from his total gross score for a round. For example, if a player with a 15 handicap has a gross score of 87, his nett score would be 72.

Match play
In match play, the situation is a little more complicated. In a match played off scratch, handicaps are not used at all. In a handicap match, however, a player may give strokes to his opponent, or receive them from his opponent, depending on their respective handicaps and the handicap allowance that is in force. The columns highlighted on the scorecard above show the men's and women's stroke indexes.

Classic Month Mania!
The Classic Month has started and we couldn’t have asked for better weather or vibe at the club. Our motto for the month is to play and have fun. The golf course is in immaculate condition and the winning scores are showing that the course is playing beautifully.

Wednesday’s Meat Day kicked off the Classic and over 60 players competed for their braai packs. Potgieter Snr and Jnr won with a whopping 51 points, which is almost 3 points per hole. Great golf!

Friday's Black Flag also saw some impressive winning scores with Denzil Potgieter Jnr winning on 35 points and Michael le Roux finishing second on 34 points. The boerewors braai and music after the game were well received and well attended.

Saturday saw our Classic Foursomes starting with some unusual music playing. This was well received from the players as it calmed the nerves before teeing off with out of bounds left on the 1st hole and right on the 10th hole.

Jaco Pieters and Tienie Maree won the gross on a 3 over par score of 147, and Michael le Roux and Nick Smit won the nett on an impressive score of 131. Interestingly, if you look at the nett results, up to 17th place had a nett better than their handicap.
